Positivity and Passion: Highlights of the GSL Summer Tournament 2024
Clubs across London came together this past weekend to play in the 2024 Girls Super League Summer Tournament to end our 2023/2024 season. Despite the rain, hail, and wind, the sun eventually shone down on the girls who performed brilliantly across six age divisions from U9 to U16.
The tournament kicked off on June 15th and 16th at our North London location where girls from across the region came together to share their passion for the sport. These girls chanted, cheered, and charged forward to show off their skills, supported by coaches, friends, family, and their teammates. Sport-womanship was certainly the name of the game.
Lymore FC and Bloomsbury Football came out with particularly strong performances. Lymore won the U12 division and Bloomsbury won the U9/10, U13/14 and U15/16 divisions. After an intense draw in the U13/14 final, Bloomsbury Football defeated Lymore FC in an exciting penalty shootout. The girls displayed impressive talent across all teams and showed off the dedication and investment put forward by the coaches and their players across this season.
Throughout the tournament, the girls support for each other both on and off the pitch helped them perform striking goals and strong defensive plays. No matter the age group, these girls confidently encouraged their teammates and communicated to effectively complete passes, throws, and goals. High-fives, handshakes, and congratulations were shared between every team and club. This season, GSL introduced a Post Match Handshake Policy. Teams shook hands out of respect for each other at the end of every match. The policy promotes a healthy environment for the girls to focus on fair competition no matter the outcome. Win or lose, these girls showed up to play football for the love of the sport, and camaraderie spread across the pitch in each division.
The referees, coaches, and tournament assistants made this year’s tournament particularly special. Their positivity and enthusiasm gave the girls a great show of teamwork. Referees helped educate the younger girls, encouraging them to develop new skills to play fair and positive games. The coaches deserve a huge shoutout for their teams’ performances throughout the weekend. Coaches created a positive atmosphere by supporting both their teams and the opposing team’s successes. Through the support and generosity of our assistants, coaches, and referees, every girl had a fan cheering her on.
Following such a successful tournament in North London, GSL is looking to develop our league across West and South London into the 2024/2025 season. The Girls Super League works to provide accessible and positive competitive matches across London. We provide the match-day equipment, referees, and the pitch; all you need to do is show up.
